Machine Learning Engineer - Energy Optimization
Change. It's in the air.
Residential heating is one of Europe’s largest sources of CO₂ emissions, while energy prices remain unpredictable for many households. At Aira, we’re on a mission to change that. Founded in 2022 and now employing more than 800 people, we develop and install clean energy solutions—including heat pumps, solar panels, and battery systems—powered by intelligent technology that helps homes operate more efficiently.
Our goal is simple: to help households reduce both their carbon footprint and their energy costs.
With headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Poland, and hubs across the UK, Germany, and Italy, Aira is rapidly scaling to bring clean energy technology to 5 million homes by 2034.
About the role
In the Energy Optimization team, we build optimization and machine learning systems that help control when heat pumps run, when batteries charge or discharge, and when it makes sense to export energy to the grid. We are also building new flexibility capabilities by coordinating fleets of homes to support the grid when it matters most.
We’re looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join this product team. You’ll work on models and systems that turn messy real-world signals into reliable decisions for customers’ homes. This includes building and improving forecasting and optimization models, productionising them, monitoring their performance, and iterating based on real-world outcomes.
You’ll work closely with Product, Engineering, Design, and other teams to ship customer-facing intelligence that is reliable, understandable, and valuable. We value clear communication, thoughtful collaboration, curiosity, and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
If you enjoy turning ML models into production systems that create measurable customer impact, we would like to hear from you.
What you’ll be doing
Build and improve ML and optimization models that power customer-facing energy optimization features.
Work on time-series forecasting, scheduling, and decision models for heat pumps, batteries, solar, tariffs, weather, and customer behaviour.
Productionise and own models end-to-end, including deployment, monitoring, reliability, and iteration based on real-world outcomes.
Run experiments on real customer systems, evaluate impact, and turn results into product decisions.
Contribute to initiatives from discovery to production impact, helping define success metrics and align with stakeholders.
Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences, explaining trade-offs, uncertainty, model behaviour, and what is good enough to ship.
What you’ll bring to the role
Experience building ML, data, or optimization systems that are used in real-world products.
Good programming skills in Python and software engineering fundamentals.
Experience taking models beyond notebooks, including evaluation, testing, deployment, or monitoring.
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Comfort working with real-world data, including ambiguity, imperfect signals, and changing requirements.
A pragmatic, product-oriented mindset: you care about measurable customer impact, not model complexity for its own sake.
Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate well in cross-functional teams.
Bonus points if you have
Experience with energy systems, electricity markets, demand response, or flexibility.
Experience with constrained optimization, control systems, or physical systems modelling.
What is in it for you?
Gain hands-on experience in a fast-growing scale-up, with a supportive and inclusive culture, and career advancement opportunities.
Collaborate with diverse teams across international markets and launch products globally.
Develop and grow personally and professionally in an entrepreneurial-minded environment.
Thrive in a dynamic, solution-oriented culture, tackling challenges and driving meaningful solutions that make a positive impact on the world.
Influence the company's success, with a visible impact on product development and market growth.
